Is it good to be a fan of multiple teams?

For an expansion city, this seems like an important question. I find most fans in my circles are pretty split on this question. On the one hand, what’s the harm in cheering for more than one team? More importantly, what’s the harm in cheering for more than one team in the same sport? It’s all just entertainment right? Perhaps you have a team you grew up around, but just weren’t into sports at the time and now you live somewhere you’ve learned to call home… and your sport-caring has increased. Naturally, you now have two teams that seem easy to root for.

On the other hand, there’s something not quite right about it. Feels too much like hedging your bets. Somewhere in the middle, I guess, are considerations for leagues. Maybe one National League team and one American League team. This used to make a little more sense, though, when the leagues were distict and played rarely in the regular season.

For me, a life-long Chicago Cubs fan, it’s an interesting problem- one I ultimately welcome into my life, but still a pea under that mattress so to speak. Factor in my childhood spent moving around (and never actually living in Chicago) and I think a fresh start with a new franchise in a city I have long-term roots and a future in… that sounds like a possible one-for-one switch. I hope to find out how the fan emotions weigh on me.
